Abstract     Variable structure learning automata are proposed as machine 
             controllers in a demand driven flexible manufacturing plant. 
             Each machine in the plant has its own automata group that 
             decides whether or not the machine should start working and, in 
             that case, which part is to be processed. The automata at each 
             machine do not have explicit information about the decisions 
             taken by the automata groups at other machines. The results 
             obtained with two simulations of a problem described in the 
             literature are presented. In one of the simulations the 
             machines are subject to failures. The results obtained show 
             that the proposed scheme has interesting demand following 
             capabilities
