Abstract The CIM approach to production management addresses the problem of dialogue and synchronism between production activities. The research and development activities that were undertaken by a university/industry joint group in the area of material handling systems and production scheduling is described. The project main goal was the development and implementation, at UMM-a Portuguese industrial plant-of a flexible manufacturing scheme combining an automatic planner and scheduler with a transport system based on automated guided vehicles (AGVs). The approach views the interaction of the two systems and aims in the future to use the production schedule generated by the scheduler to activate the material handling manager and to integrate other production sub-systems namely an automated warehouse. The authors present the scheduler algorithm and the associated planning system, the main aspects of the project, test and implementation of an AGV prototype and the project main achievements Thesaurus automatic guided vehicles; CAD/CAM; computerised materials handling; production control; scheduling Other Terms CIM approach; production management; research; university/industry joint group; material handling systems; production scheduling; UMM; Portuguese industrial plant; flexible manufacturing scheme; automatic planner; transport system; automated guided vehicles; AGVs; production schedule ; material handling manager; production sub-systems; automated warehouse; scheduler algorithm ClassCodes C7160; C3350; C7420; C3360 Article Type Practical Language English RecordType Conference ControlNo. 3945044 AbstractNos.
